2013 Teen Poetry Contest

It’s time for the annual Teen Poetry Contest!

This contest is open to students in grades 6-12. You can enter one (1) original poem of up to 25 lines. Poems will be entered in one of two categories: grades 6-8 and grades 9-12. Prizes will be given in each category for first ($25 Barnes & Noble gift certificate), second ($15 Barnes & Noble gift certificate) and third ($10 Barnes & Noble gift certificate). Deadline for entries is April 20. All contestants are invited to read their poems at the Poetry Café on May 4 at 10:00 a.m. This contest is free and entry forms are available at the Moline Public Library or here.

2013 Teen Reading Challenge

Want to win prizes, get invited to a party, and earn bragging rights for the Moline Public Library? Enter the 2013 Teen Reading Challenge and “Read to Survive / Survive to Read!” Stop by the Library to pick up your Challenge Log or print out a copy from here. The Challenge runs from January 6 through January 26. All you have to do is keep track of how many minutes you read (and yes, that includes homework), record your time on the Log, and return it to the Library by January 31st. Read 250 minutes get a prize and an invitation to the Challenge Final Party on February 1st at the Bettendorf Public Library. Read 500, 750, or 1000 minutes and get entered into drawings for even more prizes. Let’s go Team Moline!

YouTube Contest

YouTube Contest presented by Libraries Together Entries due Saturday, February 25th by 5:30 p.m.

Have you ever wanted to make movies? Well now is your chance. We will be having a YouTube contest for area teens. This year we have decided to let you or your team choose your own theme. Below is a list of suggestions, but feel free to make the movie you want to make!

 *     Live action video games, such as a reenactment of an epic Minecraft session.
*     Infomercials for your favorite book, library program, or fictional product.
*     A flashmob.
*     Incorporate Skype or twitter interview with your favorite author.
*     Reinterpret classic literature with a healthy dose of teen angst.

Videos need to be shorter than 5 minutes, and be posted to YouTube. You can then email your entry’s URL and your contact information to the Young Adult Librarian, jgillette@bettendorf.org.

 The YouTube Contest Viewing Premiere will take place on a date and location TBD in March.

The Annual Scribe Anthology Submissions

Wednesday, February 1st through Saturday, March 10th

 The Annual Scribe Anthology Author Reception Tuesday, March 27th, 6:00 p.m., Junior League Program Room

 Do you love to write? Do you journal? Then you may be interested in submitting your work for our Scribe Anthology. Young adults between grades 6th – 12th can submit their poems, short stories, and short essays for the Scribe Anthology starting February 1st. All entries are due by March 10th.

 If your work is chosen to appear in the anthology you will be invited to read your work at a short Author’s Reception which will take place at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 27th.

 Copies of the anthology will be added to the library collection and will be available for pick up in the Quad.

Video Contest – Deadline Extended!

If you planned to participate in the Modern Shakespeare Video Contest, there is still time to get your entries in. The deadline has been extended to Friday, July 22.
