A Librarian Reads…

Masterminds by Gordon Korman

Life is perfect in Serenity, New Mexico. With only 185 people, there are plenty of jobs and houses for everyone. The town’s 30 children study meditation and contentment. It’s no wonder no one ever leaves. But when Eli’s best friend, Randy, convinces him to go on a bike ride past the town line, he realizes there might be something more keeping people in Serenity when he gets so sick he nearly dies. And shortly after that Randy is sent away. Other children begin to notice other strange happenings in town, and when they compare notes they realize something is definitely not right in Serenity.

This book will appeal to fans of mystery and intrigue. Though written for a middle school audience, older readers will get pulled into the action just as easily. This is the first in a new series. Look for the sequel, Outlaws, in February 2016.
