A Librarian Reads…

Undertow by Michael Buckley

Three years ago, life as we know it changed with the arrival of the Alpha, humanoid sea-creatures seeking refuge on the shores of Coney Island. But Lyric Walker’s life changed more than anyone else’s when she discovered her mother was Alpha, sent to land twenty years ago to learn about human culture. Humans haven’t taken kindly to what they consider an invasion, and now that Alpha children are being integrated into Lyric’s high school the hatred and violence are getting even sores. All she wants is to keep her family and best friends safe until they can escape the Coney Island containment zone. But that gets a lot harder when she gains the attention of a former military principal watching her every move and a handsome Alpha prince.

A bit of a slow start, but an intriguing and timely look at the way people react to anyone they consider “other.” Recommended for high school and up.
