Yummy: The Last Days of a Southside Shorty by G. Neri (Graphic Novel)

In September of 1994, the south side of Chicago made headlines when a 14 year old girl was shot and killed by an 11 year old boy. Who was Yummy, so named for his love of candy bars? Was he a hardened criminal, a gang member who’d already been arrested several times? Was he the kid who sang in the church choir and still carried around a teddy bear? Was he both?

This slim, black and white graphic novel attempts to show the environment in which Yummy grew up and understand how this tragedy came to happen. Recommended for middle school and up.
