A Librarian Reads…

Gabe Johnson Takes Over by Geoff Herbach (formerly titled Fat Boy Vs. the Cheerleaders)

When Gabe Johnson broke into the school’s pop machine, he wasn’t trying to be funny, or greedy, or mean. He was trying to make appoint. Tired of being pushed around and made fun of for being a fat band geek, Gabe finally decided to take a stand when he learned the pop machine proceeds, which were supposed to fund the summer band camp, were going toward a new dance squad for the cheerleaders instead. Combined with losing old friends, gaining new friends (and maybe even a girlfriend), going on a diet, and dealing with his overprotective dad, Gabe’s week has been just too much to handle.

This story is funny, but also tackles some serious issues like bullying, friendship, and responsibility. Recommended for high school and up.
