Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Saenz

When Aristotle and Dante meet in the summer of 1987 they become fast friends. As they get to know each other, they start to understand themselves and their places within their families and the world a little bit more as well. Just as it seems they’ve finally connected, Dante announces his family is moving to Chicago for a year. And also, that he’s in love with Ari. The time apart allows Ari to consider what to do with that information while at the same time trying to dig up family secrets involving his older brother, dodge the attention of two girls who want to know everything about his life, and pursue an older girl. When Dante comes back, Ari just wants to be his friend and pretend nothing has changed. But change is inevitable, and sooner or later Ari has to make a decision.

Aristotle and Dante are impossible not to love, and their friendship is realistic and heartbreaking. Recommended for high school and up.
