A Librarian Reads…

Orleans by Sherri L. Smith

New Orleans is no more. After the hurricanes came disease, famine, and violence. Then came the Fever, and finally the Wall. Now the whole southern part of the United States is cut off and on its own. Fen has known no life beyond fighting for survival, so when she promises to find a better life for her tribe chief’s daughter she knows that can only happen over the wall. Daniel is from the Outer States, but willing to do anything to find a cure for the Fever that killed his little brother—even going into the forbidden Delta. The two have no reason to trust each other, but they need each other to achieve their goals, and survive long enough for it to matter.

This post apocalyptic world is eerily possible and completely believable. You’ll be caught between wanting to linger over the beautiful language and descriptions of the city and wanting to rush to the end to see what happens. Recommended for high school and up.
