The Race to Save the Lord God Bird by Phillip Hoose

When you think about extinction, you probably call to mind dinosaurs and other animals of long ago. But scientists estimate that 150-200 species of plant, insect, bird and mammal become extinct every 24 hours, and that number is on the rise. The Ivory Billed Woodpecker, also known as the Lord God Bird, was once a common sight in the American south. But between being hunted for collections and a rapid loss of habitat, this majestic and amazing bird has been lost to history. This books chronicles the bird’s decline, the attempts made to save it, and the impact that effort has had on our efforts to preserve other endangered species.

Bird lovers, fans of nature, and anyone who enjoys a good thriller will be drawn into this captivating story. Recommended for middle school and up.
