A Librarian Reads…

Skink—No Surrender by Carl Hiaasen

When Richard’s cousin Malley doesn’t show up for their turtle walk on the beach, he’s not too worried. Malley can be flighty like that. Besides, he ends up meeting Skink, a crazy old guy who claims to be looking for a turtle egg thief. But when Malley’s best friend calls him the next day to say Malley has gone, Richard does worry. She’s not only run away, she’s done it with a guy she met online. When Richard runs into Skink again, he learns the former soldier/governor now environmental warrior has decided to look for Malley. And Richard is determined to go with him. As they cross Florida and encounter lots of dangerous animals (some of whom are human) Richard learns that the right thing to do isn’t always easy, and sometimes isn’t even right.

A great blend of action and humor, this book will appeal to readers in grades 6 and up who enjoy stories about environmentalism and adventure.
