A Librarian Reads…

The New Super-Man, Vol. 1: Made in China by Gene Luen Yang (Graphic Novel)

Kong Kenan isn’t your typical superhero. In fact, he’s something of a bully. But he stands up to Blue Condor and prevents his classmate (the one he bullies) from being kidnapped. That catches the attention of The Ministry of Self-Reliance, who decide Kenan is worthy to inherit the American Super-Man’s powers. Now he’s part of the Justice League of China. Only, he doesn’t really like his teammates, they’re in competition with The Great Ten superheroes, and the Freedom Fighters of China are terrorizing the country.

A fresh take on superheroes and a look at Chinese culture. Recommended for readers in middle school and up who are fans of DC Comics and those who like to learn about foreign countries and cultures.
