A Librarian Reads…

Turtles All the Way Down by John Green

From the outside, Aza’s life doesn’t look so bad. She lost her father several years ago, but she and her mom get along great. She’s got an amazing best friend, Daisy, gets good grades, and leads a comfortable life…on the outside. Inside she’s a mess, with obsessive thoughts that spiral out of control. She’s constantly worried about her microbiome and wonders who’s in control of her life—her or the germs? When Daisy learns about a reward being offered for information about a missing billionaire, and remembers Aza used to be friends with his son, they set off on adventure that will change their lives. But only on the outside.

Green uses his own experiences with OCD to create an authentic voice for Aza. The mystery and romance aspects are secondary but still compelling. Recommended for readers in high school and up who are fans of John Green or enjoy stories about people dealing with mental illness.
