A Librarian Reads…

Other Broken Things by C. Desir

Natalie is two days out of rehab after a DUI when she goes to her first AA meeting. It’s about as bad as she expects, except maybe for Joe, the older guy who won’t cut her a break. She feels a connection to him for some reason. Back in school after missing a month, Natalie struggles to catch up and stay sober. It isn’t easy, especially with her two former best friends drunk all the time and her ex-boyfriend practically stalking her, demanding they talk. Though at first Natalie only cares about getting through her probation, once she really starts working the steps she discovers a lot about herself she would like to change. And with Joe there to help her, she thinks maybe she really can.

This is an honest and heartbreaking look at the reality of addiction and the toll it places on everyone involved. Recommended for readers in grades 11 and up who enjoy gritty, realistic stories with strong characters.
