A Librarian Reads…

Boxers by Gene Luen Yang 9781596433595

Little Bao loves life in his small Chinese village in the late 19th century. Best of all is the operas featuring the stories of the gods. But things are changing. Foreigners are taking over the country, bringing Christianity and taking away the people’s freedoms and history. When a warrior comes to Bao’s village and teaches the men there kung fu, it seems they have a chance to fight back. But it is Bao, who discovers the ritual that allows them to take on the powers of the gods, who leads them in rebellion against the foreign devils.

Based on the Boxer Rebellion of 1899, this graphic novel blends history with mysticism. Be sure to also check out the companion novel Saints. Recommended to readers in middle school and up who enjoy historical fiction.
