A Librarian Reads…

Gregor the Overlander by Suzanne Collins (Underland Chronicles, Book One)

Gregor’s father disappeared two years ago, and life has been pretty tough for his family since then. Now he’s stuck taking care of his grandmother and baby sister, Boots, all summer instead of going to camp like all the other kids in his neighborhood. When Boots chases a ball into a hole in the laundry room and disappears, Gregor doesn’t think twice about diving in after her. He can’t lose someone else. But after falling and falling, they find themselves in a different world, talking to giant cockroaches. All Gregor wants to do is get home, but the Underlanders have a prophecy, and they think Gregor is the one to fulfill it.

Gregor is an interesting and likeable character. Fans of Collins’ Hunger Games trilogy will enjoy seeing her earlier series. Recommended for readers in middle school and up who like adventure stories and reluctant heroes.
