A Librarian Reads…

Warcross by Marie Lu

Ever since her father died, Emika has drifted through the world—from foster home to juvenile detention to teenage bounty hunter. Barely able to make ends meet, she’s at the end of her rope. Her only escape, like most of the world, is through Warcross, a virtual reality interactive game that has become so much more. While watching the opening games of the annual Championships, she sees an opportunity to steal a valued power-up and uses her impressive hacker skills to grab it. But something goes wrong, and she ends up glitching into the game itself in full view of the whole world. Rather than being arrested, she finds she has gained the interest of Hideo Tanaka, Warcross’s young billionaire creator. He makes her an offer that sends her on a path she always dreamed of, but never imagined possible.

This book is full of action and adventure, and you don’t have to be a gamer to get pulled into the story. Real life and virtual reality blend together as Emika works hard to not only achieve her goals, but also stay true to herself as she’s pulled into a world where making the right decision is rarely easy. Recommended for readers in high school and up who enjoy stories about gaming, mysteries, and fierce female characters.
