Michael McCarty and Mark McLaughlin, authors of Ghosts of the Quad Cities, will share the haunted heritage of the Quad Cities at places such as Moline’s Riverside Cemetery and Arsenal Island on Thursday, October 17 at 6:00 p.m.

The Write Now! Writers Group is open to teen and adult writers of all genres and writing levels. Meetings take place on the first and third Mondays at 6:00 p.m. in the Moline Public Library 2nd floor program room. Bring up to 6 pages (double spaced) of a current writing project to share with the group for advice and feedback.

Tweens and teens in grades 6 through 12 are invited to join the Moline Public Library’s Teen Advisory Group. Make new friends, give advice about programs and materials for teens, and earn service credits. Meetings are on the first Thursday of the month at 3:30 p.m.

Tweens and teens in grades 6 through 12 are invited to a Superhero Movie Night on Monday, September 23 at 5:30 p.m. Choose which Marvel origin story to be shown, then enjoy snacks and crafts while you watch.

Students in grades 4-8 can use resistors, transistors, and other components along with programming to complete tasks and experiment to create your own devices in our Arduino Science Project. Space is limited and registration is required.

Anime Club
 is open to teens and tweens in grades 6 through 12 who love anime, manga, and all things Japanese. Drop by to watch anime, enjoy snacks, and make new friends.

Students in grades 6-12 can submit a poem in the Teen Poetry Contest for a chance to win up to $25. Information and entry form are available HERE. Entries are due April 20.

National STEM Video Game Challenge

The National STEM Video Game Challenge is accepting entries from U.S. students in grades five through twelve, through February 25, 2015. Students can enter as individuals or in teams of up to four students. Entries can be created using any game-making platform such as Gamestar Mechanic, ScratchGameMaker, Unity, or a written game design concept document. Entries will be judged on engaging gameplay, innovative/creative vision, and well-balanced game play.

Judges will select winners for each game creation platform in the Middle School and High School categories. Each winner will receive a cash prize of $1,000, as well as game design and educational software. Each winner’s sponsoring organization will receive a cash prize of $2,000.

Nearly 4,000 middle and high school youth participated in the 2013 STEM Challenge. Fifty-four percent of participants received support and mentorship from their teachers and one third of the entries received were created by girls. Previous winners have showcased their games at the White House Science Fair.
